- Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background in fashion?
My background is a mosaic of visual storytelling. I studied archaeology and art history in Istanbul, followed by a double major in media and visual arts. My journey continued with a master's degree in film and screen studies at Goldsmiths, London. While I currently work in a creative street advertisement company, my passion lies in crafting wearable narratives through jewellery.
- Can you share the story behind your brand, and what inspired you to start it?
Storytelling is the cornerstone of everything I create, whether films, collages, or even presentations. Filmmaking felt limiting due to the time and resources required. Pindex Studio was born from a desire to translate my artistic collages and journaling practice into something personal and wearable – jewellery! The Pindex manifesto reflects this: "Handcrafted jewellery line designed for unconventional storytellers, daydreamers, and memory collectors."
- What were some of the biggest challenges you've faced since starting your business?
The transition from hobby to business involved a steep learning curve. Initially, it was just creating pieces. Now, it's a multifaceted role that includes photography, editing, writing, marketing, and collaborations. It can be overwhelming, but starting and learning as I go has proven more effective than overplanning.
- What would you say is the most rewarding part of running your own business?
The people! Witnessing the love, support, and the connection my work creates is incredibly heartwarming. The cherry on top is being able to earn a living from something I truly love.
- How would you describe your brand's aesthetic and style?
Pindex is playful, whimsical, and bursting with personality. Think quirky collages translated into unique, wearable stories.
- Can you walk us through your design process?
My design process is a bit of a secret sauce! (wink) It involves extensive image sourcing, meticulous editing, a unique charm creation process, and finally, the most enjoyable part – assembling the pieces into a cohesive story.
- What about your brand makes it sustainable?
While I'm still in the early stages of implementing sustainable practices, minimizing waste is a core principle. Here's how Pindex Studio is eco-conscious:
Repurposing Materials: Just like in my daily life, I strive to find new uses for leftover materials. Scraps from cutting paper are saved for future projects.
High-Quality Pieces: I use quality materials to create jewellery that's meant to be cherished for years to come, reducing the need for frequent replacements.
Conscious Sourcing: As my brand grows, I'm actively researching ways to source materials more sustainably.
- Who is your target audience?
As my manifesto suggests, Pindex caters to "unconventional storytellers, daydreamers, and memory collectors." My target audience is anyone who wants to express themselves with a touch of whimsy and a sprinkle of sparkle!
- What role does social media play in your business, and how does it connect with your following?
Social media, particularly Instagram (@pindex.studio), is a double-edged sword. While I'm not the most active personally, it's crucial for businesses. It allows me to connect with audiences and share my work, fostering a sense of community around the Pindex universe.
- What current fashion trends are you excited about?
Personalization with charms on shoes and bags is a trend I love! It aligns perfectly with Pindex's essence of storytelling through wearable art.
- What is your favourite piece from your collection and why?
While I love each piece like my own child, the "Hackney Essentials" necklace holds a special place. It features heirloom tomatoes, a can of "Pindex" olives, scampi fries, a pint of Pindex, a chili pepper, a whippet "Moji," and a pearl. It’s a playful nod to East London life, combining iconic local elements with a touch of whimsy. It’s like wearing a piece of the city.
- Are there any upcoming events or collaborations that we can keep an eye out for?
Absolutely! Here's what's exciting in the Pindex world:
Spotlight Artist at Bloom & Whimsy: I'm thrilled to be the featured artist at Bloom & Whimsy in Folkestone's creative quarter until the end of August! Come say hello and see the Pindex collection in person.
Expanding the Collection: Get ready for more ways to express yourself with Pindex! I'm adding bracelets to the mix alongside the popular necklaces and earrings.
Pindex Universe Stickers: Take a piece of the Pindex magic with you! I've launched stickers featuring all the charming imagery you love. Decorate your world with a touch of whimsy!
Create Your Own Pindex Piece: The future is here! I'm working on a way for you to design your own custom necklaces using pre-made and custom charms. Stay tuned for updates!
